Regardless of what preciously personal pet name a grandchild may have pinned on her, the whole idea of grandmother conjures up scrumptious possibilities for magical moments that sprinkle sugary stardust all over a childhood. A visit to grandmother’s house has the power to launch flights of fancy capable of transporting youth and elder to enchanted lands where the streets are paved in treats. The simplest pleasures seem more delectable and the most difficult of tasks more palatable, more possible in the company of grandmother. Through a child’s eyes, it’s inconceivable that the soft and cuddly woman, who infuses life with frivolity and goodies whenever she’s around, could have ever been remotely associated with the role of mother. A child’s thought process just can’t connect that grandmother, who is always understanding, who can say what needs to be heard with words that seem candy-coated that make the most bitter of life’s pills easier to swallow, able to listen and counsel with the greatest empathy for a child’s parental plights, without ever really taking sides, is really a mother herself. There’s a secret, you see, that motherhood is on-the-job training for that unequivocal confection-connection that is wrapped up and delivered when grandmother meets grandchild! Thank God for the wonderful woman on whom the child in us all relies for unfailing sweet indulgence to savor all lifelong!
